What it is & why it matters

CoQ10 is a natural compound your body makes and uses in every cell to produce energy (ATP) and protect against oxidative stress. Levels of CoQ10 decline with age and can also be reduced by certain medications, including some statins. Taking a high-quality CoQ10 supplement (especially the ubiquinol form) supports cellular energy, heart muscle function, and antioxidant defences. The strongest evidence is for its use as complementary support alongside standard care for heart function, and as a potential aid for muscle comfort in some people taking statins.

Evidence rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Strong as complementary support for heart function; ⭐⭐⭐ Promising for statin-associated muscle comfort and healthy ageing.

Simple Dosage (updated 2026 guidance)

  • 100–200 mg per day is a solid everyday dose for general cellular energy and healthy ageing support.
  • 200–300 mg per day (often split) is the range used in many of the stronger heart-related trials.

Take with a meal that contains some fat for better absorption. Ubiquinol is generally the better-absorbed form, especially for people over 40. Consistency matters more than perfect timing. No loading phase needed.

Why CoQ10 is useful for different people

CoQ10 for Heart Health

The heart has very high energy demands. Landmark trials (including Q-SYMBIO) and recent meta-analyses show that CoQ10, when used as an adjunct to standard therapy, may support better symptoms, reduced hospitalisations, and improved functional measures in people with heart failure. It is not a replacement for prescribed treatment.

CoQ10 for Statin Support

Statins can lower CoQ10 levels. Some people experience muscle discomfort as a result. Research (including a 2025 meta-analysis) suggests CoQ10 may help reduce the intensity of muscle symptoms in some statin users, which can support comfort and adherence to prescribed therapy.

CoQ10 for Healthy Ageing

CoQ10 production declines with age. Supporting cellular energy and antioxidant capacity becomes increasingly relevant for maintaining vitality, heart function, and overall resilience as we get older.
