What it is & why it matters
New Zealand has one of the highest rates of vitamin D insufficiency in the developed world. Our latitude (34–47°S), sun-safety messaging, and modern work/lifestyle patterns mean most Kiwis cannot produce enough vitamin D from the sun for much of the year — especially from May to August. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the form your body naturally produces and uses. When paired with Vitamin K2 (MK-7), it becomes far more effective: D3 increases calcium absorption while K2 directs that calcium into bone and away from arteries and soft tissue. This synergy is why D3 + K2 is one of the highest-ROI foundational supplements for New Zealanders.
Evidence rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Robust (multiple large meta-analyses, RCTs, and consistent expert consensus from Dr. Rhonda Patrick, Dr. Peter Attia, and Dr. Andrew Huberman).
Simple Dosage (updated 2026 guidance)
- Maintenance: 1,000–2,000 IU Vitamin D3 + 100–200 mcg Vitamin K2 (MK-7) daily year-round.
- Winter / higher need: 2,000–4,000 IU Vitamin D3 + 200 mcg K2 daily (common NZ practitioner recommendation).
- Take with a meal containing fat for best absorption. Test your levels annually — target 75–125 nmol/L.

Why Vitamin D3 + K2 is great for different people
Vitamin D3 + K2 for Foundational Health
Almost every New Zealander can benefit from optimising vitamin D status. It supports immune function, mood stability, bone health, and long-term cardiovascular resilience. Subclinical deficiency is widespread and often goes unnoticed until symptoms appear.

Vitamin D3 + K2 for Healthy Ageing (65+)
As we age, skin becomes less efficient at producing vitamin D and bone density naturally declines. Maintaining optimal vitamin D and K2 status supports bone strength, reduces fracture risk, and helps direct calcium correctly — critical for independence and quality of life after 65.

Vitamin D3 + K2 for Women’s Health (Perimenopause & Menopause)
Women in perimenopause and menopause face increased risk of bone loss and mood changes. Vitamin D status often declines during this transition, and breastfeeding mothers are particularly vulnerable to deficiency.

Vitamin D3 + K2 for Men’s Health
Men in high-stress careers or physically demanding roles often have lower vitamin D levels due to indoor work and limited sun exposure. Optimising status supports mood, recovery, and long-term cardiovascular and bone health — especially important after 40.

Vitamin D3 + K2 for Heart Health
Vitamin D receptors are present throughout the cardiovascular system. Maintaining adequate levels supports healthy blood pressure, reduces arterial stiffness, and lowers risk of major cardiovascular events — particularly valuable in New Zealand’s latitude where deficiency is common.
