What it is & why it matters
An electrolyte complex replaces the key minerals you lose in sweat — mainly sodium, plus potassium, magnesium and chloride. These minerals help your body hold onto fluid, keep muscles firing, and support normal nerve function. The strongest evidence is for use during or after prolonged exercise, training in the heat, or other situations with heavy sweat loss. For everyday use, electrolytes can help when diet, low-carb eating, sauna, or high activity increase losses. They are not a medical treatment for dehydration or illness.
Evidence rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Strong for hydration and performance support during prolonged or intense exercise, especially in the heat; ⭐⭐⭐ Promising for everyday rehydration when sweat or dietary losses are higher; ⭐⭐ Limited for sedentary daily use in people already eating a normal diet.
Simple Dosage (from sports nutrition research)
- During prolonged or hot exercise, many protocols use 300–700 mg of sodium per hour with fluid, adjusted to sweat rate and conditions.
- For general recovery after training, mix one serving with water and drink according to thirst and body-weight change.
- Everyday use depends on activity, climate, and diet — more is not automatically better.
Mix with water. Do not use as a substitute for food or medical care. People with high blood pressure, kidney disease, or those on fluid-restricted diets should check with their doctor first.
Why an Electrolyte Complex is useful for different people
Electrolytes for Performance & Energy
Sweat costs you fluid and sodium. Replacing both during longer sessions or hot training helps maintain plasma volume, thirst and muscle function better than water alone in many studies. This is the strongest use-case for an electrolyte complex.

Electrolytes for Foundational Health
If you train, sauna, eat lower-carb, or live somewhere hot, daily electrolyte losses can add up. A simple sodium-forward mix can support hydration alongside water and a normal diet. It is not essential for every sedentary person eating a balanced diet.

Electrolytes for Healthy Ageing
Older adults who stay active, use saunas, or sweat more in warm weather still lose sodium and fluid. Electrolytes can support hydration in those contexts. Medical conditions and medications become more common with age, so extra caution and medical advice matter here.
